Literacy and Employability

I am astounded at the number of people who come to our place of business and try to put in an application. These people can barely read and write yet they expect us to hire them to do work that requires them to read and understand care plans.

I understand that many have dyslexia or other reading disabilities. I feel bad for the person's plight, but I also know we must protect our clients. Reading is absolutely necessary in our business.

How can this society employ people with such issues? And/or, how can we educate people with such profound learning challenges?

I don't have the answer.

The issue of grammar and syntax in everyday life is one that periodically comes up to annoy the living hell out of me, but I'm more than a bit of a pedant, so recognizing that, I attempt tolerance. However, whereas weblogs are one thing (admitting to sometimes ending ongoing perusal of those that are too sloppy too often), business is business, and effective communication is a key. How to fix it? Lynne Truss would suggest not putting up with it, and I'd concur. You do get to be generous, even humorous, nevertheless, in offering correction.
